This article outlines the impact of Microsoft's decision to retire the RBAC ApplicationImpersonation role in Exchange Online for Riva users.
What's Happening?
On February 20th, 2024, Microsoft announced that they will be phasing out the ApplicationImpersonation role used for application access to Exchange Online. Here's the timeline:
- May 2024: Microsoft will block the assignment of new ApplicationImpersonation roles.
- February 2025: Existing ApplicationImpersonation roles will be completely removed.
Who is Impacted?
Riva users who:
- Are setting up a new Exchange Online connection after May 2024. You won't be able to use the ApplicationImpersonation role.
- Are currently using the ApplicationImpersonation role. Your existing connections will continue to function until February 2025. However, we highly recommend migrating to the new method before then.
What Should You Do?
There's good news! Riva offers a new alternative for connecting to Exchange Online:
- Riva Cloud Users: A new "Client Credentials Method" is available. This method utilizes application permissions and eliminates the need for a Microsoft 365 Service Account. Refer to the article "Create a Microsoft 365 EWS OAuth Connection from Riva Cloud" for detailed instructions on creating the connection and managing access using RBAC (Role-Based Access Control). Please contact the Riva Success team to assist you in removing your existing connection and creating a new one using the Client Credentials Method: https://support.rivasync.com/hc/en-us/requests/new.
- Riva On-Premise Users: Contact Riva support for assistance in determining your impact and updating your Exchange Online connection if necessary. You can also reference the guide "Create & Test Client Secret-Based Microsoft 365 OAuth Connection" for setting up a Client Credentials-based connection.
Taking Action is Crucial
While existing connections with ApplicationImpersonation will work until February 2025, we strongly recommend migrating to the Client Credentials Method as soon as possible. This will ensure a smooth transition and avoid any potential disruption to your Riva functionality.
