Riva Shared Service (RSS) Maintenance Mode

(Riva On-Premise 2.4.44 or higher.)

The following RSS's support maintenance mode:

Maintenance mode is applied to an RSS to run maintenance or recovery tasks on the service or the resources that support it. While in maintenance mode, a service is non-responsive to requests. Clients attempting to access a service in maintenance mode receive an error response with the recommended amount of time to wait until retrying to access the service. Maintenance mode is required while taking snapshots or when cleaning up the Global Calendar Management database.

To start and stop maintenance mode on an RSS instance:

  1. In the CRM Service Monitor, select the Remote Services tab.

  2. In the left pane, expand an .rss node.

  3. Expand List Service.

  4. Right-click the instance of an RSS that supports maintenance mode, and select Start Maintenance Mode on Service instance.

  5. After completing the maintenance tasks, right-click the same instance and select Stop Maintenance Mode on Service instance.

Riva Shared Service Snapshots

(Riva On-Premise 2.4.44 or higher.)

A snapshot is a copy of an RSS's data made at a precise point in time. Snapshots are versioned and can be used in Data Recovery procedures.

A snapshot version is a timestamp. It is used to determine the snapshot's status: new, old, or the same.

The benefit of snapshots is the automatic recovery in multi-node clustering.

  • In Riva in a clustered multi-node environment, it is now possible to automate the fail-over and fail-back.
  • Automated internal snapshots are generated. Snapshots can be configured to automatically replicate, becoming available on the fail-over node.

Snapshots can be scheduled or taken on demand.

If no data has changed since the last snapshot, a scheduled snapshot is cancelled and an on-demand snapshot is prevented.

While a snapshot is taking place on an RSS, the service is placed in maintenance mode.

To schedule a snapshot:

  • For Riva On-Premise 2.4.44, contact the Riva Success Team.

Note: In Riva On-Premise 2.4.45, the Riva Manager application will provide an easy way to schedule a snapshot.

To take a snapshot on demand:

  1. In the CRM Service Monitor of Riva On-Premise 2.4.44 or higher, select the Remote Services tab.

  2. In the left pane, expand an .rss node.

  3. Expand List Service.

  4. Select the instance of an RSS that supports maintenance mode.

  5. In the middle pane, select Client Groups.

  6. In the right-most pane, right-click the group, and choose Create Database Snapshot.

The RSS instance is placed in maintenance mode. If data has changed since the last snapshot, a new snapshot is taken and versioned, and the Create Snapshot message box displays a report. Maintenance mode is automatically stopped, and the node becomes fully operational.

Cleaning up the Global Calendar Management Database

(Riva 2.4.44 or higher.)

  2. In the left pane, expand an .rss node.
